PPIA Junior Summer Institute at Maryland
June 15th - July 31th 2009 • College Park, Maryland

Program Overview

* Note – Maryland 's Leadership Institute only has one slot for PPIA Fellows. The rest of the summer institute is represented by other non-PPIA fellowship programs.

The Maryland Leadership Institute develops outstanding student leaders who will influence public policy at both the national and international levels. Maryland 's unique location near the nation's capitol provides students with an opportunity to access major government enterprises, international organizations, and renowned think-tanks, thereby, maximizing their exposure and participation to real life public policymaking.

The seven-week program located at the College Park campus incorporates an innovative curriculum, leadership development seminars with top executive practitioners and an integrated domestic/international program focus. Classes include macroeconomics, international economics, policy analysis, statistics, leadership theory, and foreign policy analysis. Students also participate in Maryland 's Professional Development Series, which affords them an opportunity to examine their personal leadership styles and strengths through the use of various exercises and leadership assessment instruments.

Courses/Curriculum

  • Policy Analysis
This class is an introduction to policy analysis and the complexity of policy decision making. Participants are challenged to articulate problems, anticipate consequences and arrive at decisions that can be defended in the policy arena. Case studies and guest speakers are used to discuss specific policy challenges.

  • Economics (Intermediate and Advanced)
Students are introduced to the concepts of micro and macroeconomics. The intermediate class provides students with a broad understanding of the market economy and how the market is influenced by public policies. The advanced level course focuses on international economics by analyzing basic international economic transactions, the role of institutions, and the impact of policy decisions.

  • Quantitative Methods (Intermediate and Advanced)
Students learn statistical methods used to evaluate and analyze public policy issues. Both quantitative methods courses introduce students to an applied level of statistical and econometric analysis.

  • Leadership
The summer leadership development series includes two courses . One course focuses on leadership in a networked society where information technology, public policy and business are linked. The second course examines each student's leadership philosophies and commitments in the context of leadership for purposeful change.
